Spotlight Saturday: LinguiSystems

Welcome back for the third Spotlight Saturday! Today we are featuring LinguiSystems! They are definitely another leader in products, assessments, and technology for speech-language pathologists!

LinguiSystems mission statement is to "support SLPs with products of unparalleled quality and guarantee them for life, and to offer the best service on the planet". Linda Bowers and Rosemary Huisingh, co-owners/founders of LinguiSystems, have been creating speech-language pathology materials since 1977 and shipping them same-day for free!

LinguiSystems may sell hundreds of materials on their website, but they also generously offer free CEUs (30+), a research library in which you can access, printable materials, guides, and sample pages! If you have a free LinguiSystems account, you can access these as well as sales and contests!

The free materials on LinguiSystems website help speech-language pathologists
continue their education, assist in choosing the most appropriate assessment, provide education on speech and language milestones to parents/clients/caregivers, and use fun therapy activities in their practices!

As stated in last week's post, speech-language pathologists need at least 30 hours of continuing education every three years, which can get costly. Luckily, LinguiSystems can help take care of some of your continuing education hours for free on their website! These CEUs are also available in multiple formats (online courses, content based on The Source series, etc.). In addition, LinguiSystems provides current evidence-based practice in their Research Library as well as access to Research on Request. This means that you can ask researchers questions about the evidence behind various practices and they will answer your questions within 24 hours (available Monday-Friday during business hours)! How amazing is that?!

LinguiSystems provides informational guides and articles for speech-language pathologists to keep up on the latest research and evidence in the field on their Free Downloads page. You can download PDFs of their Guide to Counseling for SLPs, Guide to Communication Milestones, Guide to RtI, Testing Guide, and Guide to Evidence Based Practice as well as informational handouts (News You Can Use) related to cleft palate, dysphagia, autism, software, assessment, and more! More free downloads from LinguiSystems top products are available, including printable games, in their Top Drawer Freebies section! Finally, you can download PDF samples of most of their products, to help you determine whether or not you would like to purchase the product; but you can utilize the downloads in therapy in the meantime as well! LinguiSystems doesn't currently offer any free applications for mobile devices or TheraLink online products, but you can trial most of their applications as well as TheraLink for free, just like their physical products!

Finally, don't forget to sign up for a free LinguiList account at LinguiSystems to access all of these freebies, but also to be notified of their sales and giveaways via e-mail!

Something else to keep in mind, which hopefully won't happen too often, is that LinguiSystems offers disaster relief for those who have been impacted by natural disasters. That means that if your LinguiSystems products become lost/damaged in a natural disaster, they will replace the materials.

We hope to see you next week when we feature free content from another favorite website in the speech-language pathology field!

Spotlight Saturday: Super Duper Publications

We're glad to have you back for our second Spotlight Saturday! This week, we are featuring Super Duper Publications! If you are a speech-language pathologist, you probably know this website very well for its educational and therapy products!

Super Duper Publications was founded by Sharon and Thomas Webber in 1986 when Sharon started creating materials for her own practice as a speech-language pathologist in the public schools. They started with two products and two sets of stickers, and now they have over 100 products!

Not only do they sell great products on their website, but they are generous enough to offer free printable materials, handouts, and apps! They also offer daily printable worksheets and discounts on their social media accounts!

The free content on Super Duper Publications' website helps speech-language pathologists to continue their education, educate parents/clients/caregivers, and use fun therapy activities in their practices!

Speech-language pathologists are required to get 30 hours of continuing education every three years. Many of the continuing education workshops, conferences, and webinars are costly. However, Super Duper Publications can save speech-language pathologists some money with their free CEU recorded/live webinars. Many are based on their products but provide insight into areas in the field including RtI, applications on tablet devices, and more!

Three free materials which help when writing reports, are the age calculator, case history form, and response analyzers. The age calculator is available online on Super Duper Publication's website as well as as an application for your mobile device. The case history form is printable from their website as a downloadable PDF file. Finally, response analyzers are available for six different assessments that Super Duper Publications sells (CPAC-S, ELLA, MAVA, MOST, SEE, and WABC).

There are other free applications for Android and Apple devices available on the application stores. Some of these include the Let's Name Things Fun Deck, Using I and Me Fun Deck, and samples of their Photo Articulation Castle, WH Question Cards, Common Core Vocabulary, and HearBuilder Phonological Awareness apps.

To help educate clients, parents, and caregivers about various speech-language disorders, Super Duper Publications offers free handouts which provide information about various disorders, assessment, diagnoses, associated disorders, and how to help educate clients who have various difficulties in over 400 Handy Handouts. Topics of these handouts range from teaching children about internet safety to word recognition to differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders. These are great for speech-language pathologists to keep in their offices or print from their computers and most are available in both English and Spanish languages.

Finally, don't forget to follow Super Duper Publications on various social media to receive daily (M-F; usually up to 20%) and weekly discounts (sometimes up to 50%) on products as well as daily (M-F) free worksheets to use in therapy! You can follow them on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube!

Plus, if you are reading this on the date this article was posted (March 15th, 2014) they are selling many of their products at zulily.com for a huge discount (through March 17th, 2014)! They have sold products at a discount on this website in the past as well, so keep your eyes open! In addition, be sure to check their website around Better Hearing and Speech Month as well as the beginning of the school year and at conventions for discounts on most of their products!

We hope to see you next week when we feature free content from another favorite website in the speech-language pathology field!

Friday FreeBEES Link-Up (March 14th, 2014)

Thank you for stopping by for the second Friday FreeBEES Link-Up! We had quite the turn-out for the first one! Thanks to those of you who downloaded and linked up! We can't wait to see who links up this week! Due to positive feedback, we have added the ability for those speech-language pathologists who have Facebook pages, but no blogs, to link-up as long as they do so by a note. Therefore, Rule #1 has slightly changed as you can see below. Rule #5 must be also followed by Facebook pages, same as for blogs (no links to "Like to Download", no "flash freebies" (must be free/accessible forever), no requirements to "Like"/"Follow" your Facebook page).

If you end up downloading freebies from those who link up, we would all appreciate it if you would show them your gratitude by providing feedback or saying "thank you"!

Link up your free material below! Link-ups close each Friday at 11:55 pm EST!

Don't forget to add the button below to your post and hyperlink it to this week's post!

Weather Idioms

Preschool/Kindergarten teachers know that spring, should it ever arrive, is a great time to discuss all things weather related since it’s a time of great variability.  This March, my area of the country will have seen temperatures from the teens to the 70s, ice, rain, gusty winds and beautiful mild days.  Weather whiplash!

Bring your older students in on the fun as well by exploring weather idioms.  I’ve created two activities covering 18 weather related expressions.  Once you’ve discussed or defined the meanings, students can fill out the first worksheet which calls for determining bad weather/circumstance vs. good weather/circumstance.

Then, try the second worksheet in which you’ll decide which weather expression(s) best suit you.  Are you a “fair-weather friend” or “a ray of sunshine?”  Are you “in a fog” or “right as rain?”

Worksheets print color or black and white and an answer key is included.
