St. Patrick's Day: Capture the Gold {FREEBIE}

I wrote about my valentine day blow dart game on my blog last month.  My clients had such a good time with this activity, that I made up a FREEBIE version for St. Patrick's Day that I am really excited to share with you.

You will need straws, some Q-tips and the leprechaun targets.  Students take turns putting a cotton swab in the straw and shooting it at the leprechauns in an attempt to win the pot of gold.  A great way to get a lot of repetitions in a session.  Want to get your copy?

Speech Fines: A Behavior Management Idea!

Most of my cuties at my elementary site have articulation goals, so we try to get LOTS of productions in during the session.  If one little lady or gent begins to get off task aka silly, then it affects the productivity of the whole group.  After giving warnings and many “please stop talking, messing around, getting out of your seat, etc.”, an idea popped in my head (this happens from time to time, lol).  All of a sudden, I blurt out, the next time I have to ask you to stop__________,  you will have a speech fine and owe me 10 words to practice.  Well, the next time came and I said “you just got a speech fine.”  Read off 10 of your words.  It worked!  I got 10 productions (woot!) and the rest of the session went without a speech fine or off task behavior.

I made this FREEBIE set of "speech fines" to use during my sessions.  I also included language cards and a blank sheet to customize.  The beauty of my speech fines are that if the student gets a "fine" he/she may have to say 10 words or 60 words!!  This stops unwanted behavior and gets the kids to practice their goals (which is why they are there in the first place).

There are 8 pages, targeting 6 different common St. Patrick's Day vocabulary words.  The whole thing is black and white, so there is minimal prep for lots of fun!

Sticky Words Freebie!

Do your kids have trouble producing complex sentences like mine do?  I'm hoping that by incorporating specific words that encourage complexity into my everyday therapy, that they'll eventually start to get the hang of it.  Soooo, we made a "sticky words" board!

Sticky is just a term that I use with my students to mean transition words/phrases or conjunctions.  We call it this because they glue words and phrases together to help give our thoughts flow and meaning.  Read more about it and find out how to grab it for yourself at my blog!

Photo Sequencing Cards for sNOw Problems!

I know my friends and family in the Northeast aren't delighted to hear me say that we won't be seeing any snow at all this year and the kids in particular are a little sad.  (Although the sunny, 70 degree weekend we had more than made up for it!)

Regardless of whether or not the weather cooperates, I still like to do some snow themed crafts and activities in my therapy room.  This year we even made "snow!"

I have a few students working on sequencing goals, so I made a nice stack of photo cards to help us organize our thoughts about what was likely to happen, what did happen and then relay it back in a nice narrative.

You can pick them up here.

Wishing you sunny days ahead and a happy Valentine's day!

I'm seeing green.

I know that it's a little early to be talking about March, but somehow I just couldn't wait any longer to share one of my favorite crafts for St. Patrick's Day.

The top hat can be used for pretty much any goal that you need to work on with your students. I initially used this craft to focus on parts of speech. My example contains adjectives for MacKenzie O'Shamrock from The Luckiest Leprechaun story. If you notice, I left off his actual name so my paper so that my students would have to guess who my card was about.

Head on over to my blog to read more about my latest craft project by clicking on the image below.

The Fun Pirate Hunt! (an easy reader)

Today's freebie is a simple easy reader story I made for my clients working on simple phonological awareness skills (mostly decoding of CVC2 and CVC2C3 words).  As you can see below, it is quite repetitive in nature so the students only have to focus on a few new words to decode on each page.  The best part is you can use this for any of the following goals:
  • phonological awareness skills
  • auditory memory and recall
  • visual memory and recall (for same words from page to page)
  • very simple reading comprehension skills
  • sequencing and retelling the story verbally or with picture cues
  • targeting such sequence words as "first, second, third, fourth, fifth/last"

Looking for this freebie?  I explain more about it and where you can get it on my website.   Grab it here!

Quick and easy, that’s what we like!  I truly hope you enjoy this freebie.  Click here to download the freebie.

The Day It Rained In Speech!

Happy February! Are you all enjoying a bunch of fun Valentine's Day themed activities in your speech sessions? Pinterest is filled with fun crafts and activities that can be easily turned into a therapy activity…. but I have one more for ya!
One of my most favorite books to read around this time of year is, The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond. This is an adorable story about a little girl that caught some hearts and turned them into valentines for her friends.
This story inspired an umbrella craftivity! I don't know about you, but when I think of rain, I immediately think of an umbrella. This activity can be adapted to just about any therapy goal.
Included in this packet is an umbrella template, hearts, and labels. After you read the story, have your students create their own umbrella and cut out hearts. Here are a few examples of goals I have targeted with this activity:
“Today it Rained /r/ words in speech!”
“Today it rained nouns in speech!”
“Today it rained conjunctions in speech!”
“Today it rained pronouns in speech!”
You can download this free craftivity from my TpT store here: The Day It Rained In Speech!

Valentine's Day MiniBook

Everyone loves getting cards and notes for Valentine's Day, so who wouldn't love getting a minibook?!  You can save ink by printing it in grayscale or black and white to save ink, then having students color and decorate.

Students can draw or write to describe why their Valentine is so special, so it can work for a variety of ages and abilities.

You can download this freebie from my TpT store HERE.
