Gearing Up for Better Hearing and Speech Month

Is it just me or is April flying right by? I know as an SLP I am getting excited to see May creep closer on the calendar because May=a month to celebrate better hearing and speech! I don't know about you but I get excited with the thought of being able to spread knowledge about our profession! How many times do people ask you "What do SLPs really do?"? I hear this question on end so I love being able to educate others about the field that I love. What better way to spread knowledge about our field than with a fun Hearing, Speech, and Language Fun Fact a day!

Check out these Hearing, Speech, and Language Fun Facts here  or click on the picture below

How will you be celebrating better hearing and speech month in your room or office?

Springtime Idioms FREEBIE

This is an oldie, but goodie freebie that I created a couple of years ago.  It is perfect for your upper elementary and middle school grade students.

There are "spring" themed idioms match up card and an idiom worksheet to create an idiom journal.  I love to play challenge games or Jeopardy after we have went over these idioms in therapy to see what my students can remember!

Voice Disorders Freebie- One Month To A Healthier Voice Calendar

Hello! The month of May is fast approaching and May is Better Hearing and Speech Month!  It is a special month that has been designated to help increase the awareness about Shanda and I's chosen profession that we love so very much- Speech Language Pathology! Better Hearing & Speech Month has inspired us to share this voice freebie with everyone we know, and especially the teachers who use their voices a tremendous amount during their working days!  Did you know that speech- language pathologists help to diagnose and treat voice disorders?

What is a Voice Disorder?

A voice disorder can be defined as a problem involving abnormal pitch, loudness or quality of the sound produced by the larynx, more commonly known as the voice box (ASHA PDF 1). A person may have a voice disorder or dysphonia (medical term) if the change in the voice has occurred for at least two weeks and in those two weeks the person wasn't experiencing an illness.

Slide1

What we would like to do, is provide you with a link to a voice document that we have put together to help increase a persons knowledge of  voice disorders and how to help prevent and manage them.  This handout may be a great one to hand out to our teacher friends during May.  They use their voices a lot and the calendar offers some friendly reminders on how to keep their voices healthy.

Please click on any of the descriptive pictures below to pick up this voice freebie over at Teachers Pay Teachers and feel free to share this with your own clients (as it can be adapted to be used with a wide audience from children to adults who are struggling with problems with their own voices) and the teachers that you know that may benefit from the information provided.

Best wishes for a happy May and Better Hearing & Speech Month!
This document includes a newly revised 30 day calendar that you can use to track the days to a better voice in just one month!
We have also described some voice disorders influenced by vocal overuse and included some pictures of them.

And please look over this slide provided by ASHA -American Speech-Language & Hearing Association.  It has been provided to teach the public about communication disorders.  We hope you find it informative!

We're bananas for multiple meaning words

The warmer weather has me thinking of tropical places and the Disney version of the "Day-O" song. My students are all focusing on plant and environmental themes this six weeks in science so I thought I would make a game-based activity that featured a fun animal.

The layout of this game is pretty simple. Students pull out cards from the pile that will either have a word, a monkey (lose a turn or take another turn), or a banana (word challenge). Whoever has the biggest pile at the end of the game wins.

Head on over to my blog to learn more about this fun activity by clicking on the image below.

Artic Hidden Object Easter Egg Hunt: Part 2!

I know, I know, it's after Easter but my kiddos tend to love celebrating Easter for the whole month. Maybe it's the fact that Easter and spring go hand in hand.  Or maybe it's candy. Ha! Who knows?!  Anyway, I thought I'd share one of my Easter activities with which we have some fun.  Not celebrating Easter anymore?  No worries.  Print out and save for next year!!! :)

Last year I made this simple fun "Easter egg hunt" game where students can lift Easter eggs to find the hidden object underneath to work on articulation sounds.  This packet works on initial and final /p, b, m/ pictures.  Want to make it more fun?  Place a paperclip on each egg and have the students life up the eggs either with a magnetic wand or a magnetic fishing pole!  My young kiddos really enjoy this game!

Happy Easter and grab it here!

Artic Tacs for Sweet Treat-mint

I created this as a silly pun for both April's Fools or to be used during Better Hearing and Speech Month.  This freebie contains three activities.

The first allows you to transform a jumbo mint box into a dice dispenser.  I used bakeable clay to make "mints" and used Sharpie marker to put a number and dots on each.  Simply shake out a mint to find out how many times to say your word and/or how many mints to color on the reinforcement sheet.

The second set of stickers can be used to make prizes, promos or gifts of Artic Tacs for your students.

Finally, I have two reinforcement sheets (1 color, 1 b&w) to use as a no prep activity when the end of the year gets hectic!

Click here to pick up your copy and please consider leaving feedback or following.  Enjoy!

Earth Day Activities

If you're like me and these are your first days back from break, you're definitely going to need some activities to get you through the next couple of days or maybe even the next couple of weeks. With Earth Day just around the corner, I created an Earth Day Mini-Book that you can use with your students to discuss how they can help keep the Earth clean and beautiful. I feel that it is important to instill in our kiddos that they can do their part to keep Earth beautiful and that they can take ownership when it comes to protecting our environment. Click on the picture below to take you to our blog where you can download an Earth Day mini-book Freebie to use with your students this month!
